Meet My Skills
When one is researching on designers of the past and present, you’ll likely register, that their newer designs were often based on older designs. This is only making sense, as designers are always limited (though expandable) to their own skill set and the manufacturing skills and markets of their regular clients. Therefore Philippe Starck is noticeably often using techniques of the plastics processing industry, while Stefan Diez – as a trained carpenter – uses his experience with wood and Luigi Colani, as a man of his time, works heavily with laminated fiberglass. In addition the tools and machines of a client/company presuppose the later design very much. Sometimes they are even the dominant factor.
This project tries to expand the knowledge of the students in all these areas. The task is to find a company by their own and try to develop a design that arouses from the limits of that companies manufacturing and material skills. These restrictions often lead to strong designs.
